A mediaeval “club ball” game with a bowl to a batsman. Ball catchers are shown positioning themselves to catch a ball. Detail from the Canticles of Holy Mary, 13th century.

Cricket is one of many games in the “club ball” sphere that basically involve hitting a ball with a hand-held implement; others include baseball (which shares many similarities with cricket, both belonging in the more specific bat-and-ball games category[2]), golf, hockey, tennis, squash, badminton and table tennis.

Cricket types range from 20 to 5 days of test matches, with each team batting a single 20 over innings. Cricketers usually play in all-white kits, but they wear club or team colours in a limited amount of cricket. Besides the basic kit, certain players are wearing protective gear to prevent ball injury, a tough solid spheroid in compressed leather, with a slightly elevated sewn seam enclosing a cork core with a tightly wound string.

1) Main items: the field of cricket, cricket pitch, cricket, and wicket

Cricket is a cricket game between the two teams of eleven players, played on the field of cricket (see picture, right).

[60] The field is usually circular or oval in shape and the edge of the playing area is marked by a boundary, which may be a fence, part of the stands, a rope, a painted line or a combination of these; the boundary must if possible be marked along its entire length. [61

2) A rectangular spot (see picture below) is at the approximate centre of the field at either end of a wooden target, called a wicket, where the wickets are set 22 metres (20 m) apart. [62] The report is not available. Space is 10 feet (3.0 m) wide and the grass is very small and appears to be worn as the game progresses (cricket can also be played on artificial surfaces, notably matting). There are two bails in each wicket, three wooden stumps. [63]

3) As illustrated above, the pitch is marked at each end with four white painted lines: a bowling crease, a popping crease and two return creases. The three stumps are fundamental to the eight-foot-eight-inch bowling hollow. The popping crease is drawn four feet in front of the bowling crease and parallel to it; while it is drawn as a twelve-foot line (six feet on either side of the wicket

Before the match starts, team captains (who are also the players) threw a coin to determine which team is going to fight for the first time, and thus take the first innings[65].
